Choosing the right channels for your brand


Many brands have spent the past few years rushing to every new channel that pops up, without a clear purpose or goals. Today, brands are refocusing on their core message and looking at the channels strategically in terms of the audience and message they want to get across.

Jim Zdancewicz, Head of Creative & Content Production for eBay Enterprise, recommends that brands “pick the channels they feel have the best chance of exposing their brand in the right way and expand that from there”. For Zdancewicz, there is a risk in thinking that every single channel is relevant. “Don’t go too broad too early, you risk watering down your message or losing control of your message”.

iOS November 2015 Release



Globaledit web platform: Read about the November 2015 Software Update.


We released a new update to our iOS app this morning and users on iOS 9 with iPads and devices with 3D touch will appreciate the new touches. Additionally, we’ve made it easy to share lightboxes right from within the application to make collaborating easier.

NEW: Share Lightboxes
Share Lightbox from iOSYou can now share lightboxes right from your iPhone and skip the main application. To share a lightbox, tap on a lightbox and click “share lightbox.” Enter in your recipients, select your permissions, and click share. We support the most common sharing permissions: download restrictions, rating restrictions, and collaboration restrictions.

NEW: 3D Touch
Next- we’ve added support for Apple’s 3D Touch. If you have a new iOS device, you can hard-press on an image and see the full resolution version without having to navigate into a lightbox. This allows you to quickly look through images and improves the overall browsing experience.

NEW: Split screen
In addition to 3D Touch, we now support the split screen view on iOS. This intelligently lays out the interface to support globaledit side-by-side with other applications.

ENHANCED: Intercom Integration
Lastly, we have enhanced our Intercom integration. Intercom is a messaging service we use to publish notices and to communicate directly with users. Now, you can use the service to chat with our support. To message us, click on Settings > More. There is a new option to “Contact globaledit” that will message our support department.

Creative operations process makes perfect

One of the perks of my job is that I get a deep view into the creative operations process for our clients. We are intimately woven into the fabric of some of the largest fashion brands in the world and are granted access to their inner workings. Likewise, we work with potential clients and prospects to understand how we can fit in their process.

Because of this access, we can learn, study, and define best-practices across verticals and improve our client’s processes. Creative production headaches are not unique and their causes are more common than not. This puts us in as much as a consulting role as it puts us in the software support role.


So what have we learned?

Well, it turns out that the most successful clients have a documented process. There are clearly defined roles, artifacts, deliverables, and handoffs between participants. A well-structured process forces your teams to operate predictably and efficiently.

I’ve spent a lot of time reading client notes, talking to clients, and trying to synthesize best-practice templates for our core industries. The one I want to talk about is an eCommerce creative operations workflow.


November 2015 Software Update


Globaledit iOS app for iPhone and iPad: Read the iOS November 2015 Release.


We released an update to the globaledit web platform and want to share some some of the changes. Among the most exciting new features are mobile-friendly lightboxes to make quickly sharing images faster and a new capability we’re calling ‘Workflows’.

Mobile Friendly Guest Lightboxes (NEW)
Mobile lightbox You’ve always been able to share lightboxes with guests, but in the past those guests had to have our iOS app to view the lightboxes on iPhones or iPads. Now these users can simply click the emailed link and view the lightbox in their mobile browser. This enhancement makes getting approval or feedback from anyone lightening fast.

Note that when guests open links on the desktop they still get an optimized version of globaledit in their desktop browser. The new functionality change only impacts users when on mobile phones or tablets.

Workflows (NEW)
Workflows are simple “If ___ then do ____” style templates you can use to automate common tasks. For example, “If Tommy approves an image, then put it into this lightbox.” (more…)

Omnichannel marketing is reshaping creative operations teams, noticed Vanessa Holden, Independent Consultant and former SVP, Creative Director at West Elm. Vanessa was part of a panel discussion titled “The impact of omnichannel on creative operations” presented by globaledit, on September 22nd, 2015. She shared with us her thoughts and insights on the evolving role of creative and production teams on set.


1. Integrated production: the new normal

Today, creative teams are becoming more integrated to produce and serve every channel of the marketing mix. The multiplicity of channels forces production teams to leverage every photo shoot to produce a large variety of visual content (photos, behind-the-scene photos and videos, etc.) in a minimum amount of time and budget. Typically, the main photo shoot with models for print and catalog becomes an opportunity for brands and organizations to create low-budget visual content, such as behind-the-scenes photos and videos, which can be leveraged on a multitude of channels.

How to build a successful brand platform across channels?


Building and maintaining brand consistency across every single marketing channel is incredibly challenging. How do you provide the best brand experience everywhere your customer is? Vanessa has focused on the art of storytelling through images and words throughout her diverse career in publishing and design. As Senior Vice President and Editor-in-Chief of Martha Stewart Living, Vanessa oversaw the creative and editorial direction of the award-winning magazine and married its visual style with the brand’s media and retail segments.

Globaledit for iOS – September 2015 Update


Reviewing assets while on-the-go is about to get easier. The latest update to our iOS app makes it easy to filter and sort images so you can very quickly find and review exactly the images you need to see from your iPhone or iPad.

To get to the new feature, enter a job and load the grid view. Next to the grid view icon, click on the funnel icon to load the Filter and Sort options.

Stacked Filters iOS GlobaleditFiltering suppresses all images that do not match your criteria. The numbers on the right side-show you how many assets in view are approved, selects, starred, etc. Click on the filters you want to apply and the grid view will update automatically.

Sorting is similar. But instead of hiding assets you rearrange them based on name, ratings, and other common metadata. Clicking on the arrow allows you to swap between ascending and descending order.

Retina Support

Also new in this release is support for full Retina quality on all images if you have a retina display iPhone or iPad. This allows you to have pixel-perfect images and should improve the overall image quality in the app. We’ve also made a few other tweaks to the UI to better support the iPhone 6S and Plus. The result is a better looking application with improve usability.

As brands and retailers are shortening their supply chains and embracing omnichannel retailing and marketing, the demand for product photography and visual content is exponentially growing. Today creative production and marketing teams are constantly facing the challenges of producing more visual content (e.g. product photography, editorial), for a larger number of on- and offline channels, and in a shorter period of time. Finding technological solutions to these growing pressures has become critical for creative production professionals and their companies in a highly visually competitive market. Scale & agility are key in this new creative production environment.

During a DAM Meetup about “Product Photography & DAM”, Deanna Bedoya (Lafayette 148 NY), Sara Mitzner (swimsuitsforall), Nikki Schiwal (J.Crew), and Jim Zdancewicz (eBay Enterprise) shared their creative production volume and process, as well as the solutions they are using or considering to produce more content better, cheaper, and faster.

Top brands and retailers like J. Crew, Lafayette 148 NY, swimsuitsforall, and eBay Enterprise capture more products and lifestyle photography than ever before: J.Crew shoots around 10-15 different looks a day, 50 to 300 images for each look; Lafayette 148 NY shoots 1,500 images per month; swimsuitsforall produces approximately 2,500 images month per month; and eBay Enterprise shoots from 3 to 4,000 images for their clients from different sets all across different locations. 3 Ways to Improve Creative Production Workflow


We’ve all been there: Trying to make the most of our time by using production shortcuts that can save our schedule. But when your company or client starts producing high volume of creative assets for their multi-channel retailing and marketing strategy, the ‘quick & dirty’ fixes that worked for small scale teams or creative production no longer work.

Inefficient habits can have a long-term impact on your team’s productivity, their morale, and your business. When your team needs to deliver a high volume of assets in a short period of time – production cycle times are constantly shrinking – you need to bring your A game.


  1. Centralize

The worst thing that could happen to a creative production team is to be physically and virtually disconnected from their assets. The two most common mistakes are:

  • On set: Uploading all the files to a hard drive and shipping it to the in-house creative team or advertising agency. In this case, teams can sometimes wait for days before they can start working on the assets.
  • On set or at the office: Uploading files to the FTP server or using consumer tools like Dropbox, WeTransfer, Google Drive or HighTail to share the assets with the rest of the team. Here’s the truth: These tools are not powerful enough to quickly upload and share terabytes of files in no time.

CentralizeThe moment you start using these tools, your creative production is already delayed – by a few hours or a few days. Since creative teams are more and more distributed, centralizing your assets on a cloud-based platform is key to get your creative production on the right track. It also provides one single source of truth accessible anytime, anywhere. It removes all doubts and frustrations right from the beginning.


  1. Simplify

Scattered communication is the evil of our time. Teams email each other for everything and anything: Share files, chase approvals, provide feedback, etc. Mistakes or errors are common – if not the rule. Tech Talk: Matt Callahan


Once a month, we meet with one of our software developers to get to know the team behind the technology. Meet our Aussie Software Engineer, Matt Callahan, who ensures the scalability of the globaledit platform for future developments.


What do you do at globaledit?

I am currently a software engineer at globaledit. I build out some of the core features and ensure the system architecture translates into code properly for successful scalability. So every time a new feature comes out, I oversee it to make sure the code structure is clean, secure, stable, and scalable in the long run. Also, because the application is available for iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Desktops, I focus on building out our API, which globaledit platform is utilizing more and more.


mattc1What is your role in the feature development process?

When the team comes up with a feature request, we’ll do a proof of concept to come up with possible solutions and technical recommendations – keeping in mind the existing code structure and future developments. For every new feature, we think about: What the customer wants, how the changes are going to affect the customer and the existing features, and how we can build on the system architecture without affecting future releases. It’s a trade-off: Sometimes the best technical approach might not solve customers’ needs, or a great new feature might have a huge impact on the system.

How to Optimize Your Retouching Workflow


For eCommerce, advertising campaigns, or editorial features, retouching is an essential part of every creative production process. At Impact Digital, we’re constantly against the clock producing hundreds upon thousands of images for clients. And when you’re retouching for top international brands and photographers, you have to ensure every photo is of the highest caliber. This is why we have a refined, tried and tested process to produce excellent images.




1. Creative kick-off

Before we even touch the photos, it’s important that we sit down with the client and explore his or her vision of the shoot. What ‘story’ do they want to tell? Do they have any reference pictures? We ask these questions to get the images right from the start—saving the client time and reducing the amount of retouching rounds down the line.

Organizing hundreds of reference images, RAWs, JPEGs, and metadata can be very tricky at times. We use globaledit to centralize all our assets right at intake. This simple step can be a life-saver when a client wants to shift conceptual directions or when we’re creating composite shots. Rather than digging through folders or hard drives for the right images, our retouchers can pull them from the cloud into Photoshop straight away.

How Digital Markups Can Improve Creative Collaboration

Today, online creative collaboration looks like this:

  • Where is his/her email?: One project or one asset (image, PDF, video) can generate thousands of back-and-forth emails.
  • In which email did I read this?: When you scan emails all day long, it can be difficult to search for the exact comment or note, especially on iPhone or iPad.
  • Who said it?: With several stakeholders involved, you vaguely remember someone sending a comment about a specific asset, but who and when?
  • Did he/she give his/her feedback?: It’s hard to track who did or did not review the assets in time.
  • What changes need to be made?: Collecting all the feedback is time-consuming, and mistakes are common.
  • What is he/she talking about?: You’ve got the message but you’re still trying to figure out how to read between the lines.
